For some people, looking for that elusive internet job is a waste of time. Simply put, there are very few ‘real’ admin work-from-home jobs to be found in on Gumtree and other similar sites.
Are there no genuine opportunities then?
Most of the work out there require some entrepreneurial spirit and some marketing of skills.
Companies like Avon, Honey and Tupperware, etc. offer opportunities for those good with sales, but many people shudder at the thought. At least it is an honest living. Circumstances being as they are though, consumers are using their disposable income very discerningly these days.
If you have skills, there are usually people, somewhere, who need it and will pay for it. It is only a matter of promoting yourself as a business entity.
For instance – if you want to do data capturing at home, then offer your services to the company you work for or other small companies. The expectation should be that you have to make the offer
With labour laws as the are, most companies use employment agencies – online and offline for ‘traditional’ employment opportunities. If they need it, they will look for business services.
Think about it: all of us have something we are good at. Photography, web design, marketing, babysitting, bookkeeping, etc. Do what you have to do to let people know what you have to offer.
The internet also offers its own opportunities, like affiliate marketing, auctioning and Adsense. In a saturated market it takes hard work and time to make an impact.
There are real opportunities, but as with most thing in life, it necessitates action from us.

The internet is a place with so much potential for starting a business, especially in South Africa where more and more people are getting connected.
Our internet markets are so far from its full potential that I suggest you get yourself ready for the day when broadband becomes even cheaper. The internet will become accessible and cheaper for households throughout the country.
For you to really start earning money from multiple income streams on the internet, you have to have some sort of an online presence.
As I have explained in a previous article on my website, you can earn an income without a website, by signing up for an affiliate programme like the one at Bidorbuy’s auction site, promoting individual products or their seminars.
It is very limiting to only use the e-mail option, most affiliate marketers eventually opt for a website or blog.
Where do you start?
Even though there are many free websites available on offer, it is preferable to get your own domain name to create a trustworthy site.
There are blogging sites like www.blogger.com, www.typepad.com or the popular www.wordpress.com, but most of them have rules about marketing and you don’t have 100% control of your website.
Other blogging sites, like blogs.24.com are social sites and do not allow affiliate links and other marketing tools, so ensure follow the rules of the sites you decide to blog at.
The best option is to pay for web hosting service, like Afrihost. They have various payment plans to choose from, with a reasonable cost of R99.00 per month you can host your blog or website and have total control of your content.
What can you blog about?
The best topics to blog about (or create your website around) would be things you have a real interest in. It might be something you consider to be simple, but other people might be looking to talk about.
If you are a movie buff then talk about the latest movies or if you like gaming, then write about that. You can write about writing, knitting, cooking, crafts, fishing, cars, etc. The list is endless.
Is that all?
NO! You have to do your research! Read everything you can about blogging and internet marketing. A good place to start would be a free resource from Quirk eMarketing. Keep up to date on what is happening in the internet marketing world and you will make money.
What Now?
Now you start writing! Geta few articles done and then sign up for an account with a reputable website like the TrafficSynergy Affiliate Program ,Kalahari.net’s eTrader and/or PC Mall and find campaigns to match your topics of interest. Sign up to Google Adsense immediately and start earning.

In the first part of my quest to earn extra money online, I explained how I started with auctions. That is not where it stopped though.
Just to cover my basis, I moved onto trafficsynergy, a website that accumumlates various campaigns – local and international.
Here you can either look for a campaign specific to your website or blog’s niche or use a revolving banner that alternates automatically between various campaigns. You receive a pre-determined fee per sale or per click.
You can choose to add text, html or image creatives to your blog, newsletter or website, by inserting script codes onto your website or blog.
Certain advertisers require your website or blog to be screened to determine if your blog meets with their standards.

One of the questions I often get asked about Bidorbuy’s affiliate marketing is how affiliates get paid.
After registering and confirming your existence (by placing a bid on an auction), each affiliate gets a code.
Bidorbuy automatically generates a code that points directly to each confirmed individual’s account.
The account is easily accessible from the auction website’s navigation bar.
As long as the code is used for each programme you set up, as an affiliate you will get paid for each referral.
Bidorbuy has many ready made banners with codes that can be copied and pasted into a website, blog or newsletter.
I sometimes use banners, but mostly create coding that points to one or two users directly with my own pictures or free stock photos.
Affiliates get paid once the amount earned is above R250, by the 7th of the month after referrals are accrued. For instance: if you earn at least R250 by the end of September, payment will be received by the 7th of November.

Once I decided to start earning an income through affiliate marketing, I started thinking of a strategy.
Since I have a reasonably good knowledge of jewellery, I focused my attention on promoting jewellery products and also gemstones and beads on www.bidorbuy.co.za. Sellers will not mind having their products showcased, but they naturally do not appreciate other people using their pictures.
Instead I opted to use free stock photos of jewellery or gemstones or my own photographs on my website.
I also chose to focus on sellers I have purchased from before and who have excellent ratings from previous buyers.
First I decided on the products, then loaded pictures onto my website with a description of the products.
During my time as a www.bidorbuy.co.za seller, I followed the same procedure, except now I did not have to do all the work.
It is a win, win situation. The seller gets maximum exposure, and I get paid for introducing the buyer to the auction website.
I have not come across a simpler way for an inexperienced marketer to earn money online.
