For some people, looking for that elusive internet job is a waste of time. Simply put, there are very few ‘real’ admin work-from-home jobs to be found in on Gumtree and other similar sites.

Are there no genuine opportunities then?

Most of the work out there require some entrepreneurial spirit and some marketing of skills.

Companies like Avon, Honey and Tupperware, etc. offer opportunities for those good with sales, but many people shudder at the thought. At least it is an honest living. Circumstances being as they are though, consumers are using their disposable income very discerningly these days.

If you have skills, there are usually people, somewhere, who need it and will pay for it. It is only a matter of promoting yourself as a business entity.

For instance – if you want to do data capturing at home, then offer your services to the company you work for or other small companies. The expectation should be that you have to make the offer

With labour laws as the are, most companies use employment agencies – online and offline for ‘traditional’ employment opportunities. If they need it, they will look for business services.

Think about it: all of us have something we are good at. Photography, web design, marketing, babysitting, bookkeeping, etc. Do what you have to do to let people know what you have to offer.

The internet also offers its own opportunities, like affiliate marketing, auctioning and Adsense. In a saturated market it takes hard work and time to make an impact.

There are real opportunities, but as with most thing in life, it necessitates action from us.

Is internet marketing in its current form nothing more than a pyramid scheme? Is the internet marketing/SEO bubble likely to burst like the dot-com bubble did in the early 2000s?

If you are asking this question, you are not the only one. Yaro Starak in his blog article Is Internet Marketing Just Another Fools Gold Rush asks the same question.

With internet marketers offering advice on everything from Adsense to SEO there will come a time when doing what you are doing now will have to change, because we are always looking to improve. By nature we don’t stagnate we are always prone to try something new, until it takes off and everyone else does the same thing.

That doesn’t mean internet marketing does not have a place. You will merely have to find newer and more innovative ways to get your products noticed.

Someone somewhere is making money off an idea. This is called entrepreneurship!

From a South African perspective we are only at the beginning of the internet marketing stage. Try asking anyone what SEO or Adsense means and probably 1 or 2 out of ten (outside the field) will know you’re talking about the internet.

We have plenty of room for growth because:

Bandwidth is still out of reach for most people in South Africa, but it is becoming less expensive for home users. With the 2010 Soccer World Cup on the horizon, all sorts of upgrades are being made to infrastructure in the country. The city of Durban is already leading the pack by making cheap broadband available to residents and businesses alike, becoming the first city in the country to do so. Cape Town and Johannesburg are not far behind with the same offerings.

Inexpensive, basic laptops for school children are being made available through non-profit organisations in developing nations like ours. Already Scottsdene High School in a poor suburb of Kraainfontein is piloting a government project whereby every student in each grade has access to a computer throughout the day. This includes internet access.

With internet and computers becoming more and more accessible for everyone, in the next two years an entire population of internet users will enter the market. With all the information already out there, don’t expect this new market to start from the bottom! The amazing place that the internet is will just keep amassing new consumers who come in and in a month or two of surfing will catch on that they are being marketed to.

So yes, in its current form the SEO bubble will burst if it does not progress to a different level. We will improve though, because it is in our nature to want change.

Google will be rolling out a new feature for updating Adsense units. It will appear under the Adsense Set up tab, with a Manage Ads feature.

Before, when you wanted to change the adverts, you had to change the code on your website. No more!

The new feature will allow Adsense code to be stored on the Google servers and changes will be made directly from the Adsense Account.

Check it out here

I guess Google will be able to keep a tighter reign on their ads and our Adsense accounts.

Makes loads of sense to me!

Every day we have to make choices, whether we want to or not. Sometimes it is easy. Sleep for another 30 more minutes or get up and exercise. Eat oatmeal or bacon and eggs for breakfast. Get mad at the taxi drivers or listen to your favourite radio station on your way to work.

Then it gets harder! Obama or McCain (if you are American), Zuma or anarchy (for us South Africans). Watch another Springbok rugby match or have root canal (dentist wins hands down!)

Oh yes those sticky moral decisions raises its ugly head once in a while. For instance – Do you go back into a shop and pay after unconsciously walking out and only realising your mistake in the parking lot.

So my moral decision came about today while surfing the internet. I always wondered how bloggers make their money through Adsense. Those of us who are not as Adsense savvy are always looking for the answers.

We get roped in by websites and bloggers showing off their 4 figure Adsense invoices, but have 1 or 2 Adsense adverts on their websites or blogs.

Of course there are bloggers and website owners who write profusely and offer great content, but my guess is more than just a few bloggers use ethical means.

Fair enough, but then how about not making it seem like it’s all content and clever positioning?

I spend most of my waking hours with a computer or cellphone closer than an arms length away. Actually my cellphone is at my bedside ready to download e-mails first thing in the morning.

Without a doubt I am a technology addict! What’s even more interesting is my knowledge is so limited. I cannot keep up to date with all the latest developments. Of course I know about iPhones, Adsense, Viral Marketing, SEO, WordPress themes, and who knows what else.

Then I come across another blog and I read about people making $500 a month from Adsense, without doing anything. It makes me wonder what I’m missing. Where does all this information come from?

Where do people find the time to write content for their blogs, read other blogs and comment? Where do they find the time to keep up to date with updates and new technology? And then still have enough energy for a social life.

Come Friday evening I am usually totally finished. My brain totally goes into information overload drive and all I can do is veg out on couch.

Of course this has been the first month since I have monetised my website and 7 months since I first learnt to develop my own website. Plus I earn my living in un-IT related field! I haven’t done badly at all.

I keep having to remind myself…baby steps.
