It’s true what they say. The make-up gods work in mysterious ways. In this case, the Estee Lauder gods.
It all started about a week or so ago when I received my August 2011 Fairlady magazine in the post.
A whole month had gone by since the last one and I was hungry for anything fashion and beauty related. Minus the celebrity stuff!
So I paged through my brand new magazine with its free gift consisting of a small container with Nivea cream, which I tossed aside and a little sachet of Nescafe Gold – a more welcomed gift.
But I digress again…
Two items stood out in the magazine. Estee Lauder’s tinted day cream and a CyberWhite brightening UV protector.
It seemed like just the two products needed to make me feel like a million bucks. Winter, remember, is not my friend.
But going to the Estee Lauder counter can be very intimidating. Movies have been made about ladies and gents who make their living on the other side of make- up counters and their treatment of people like me.
But then later in the week I followed my friend’s Facebook feed to Estee Lauder’s fan page.
Divine intervention from the skin-care and make-up gods, no doubt.
Oh my word…it was like discovering a
new world. I felt like Jan van Riebeeck, Christopher Columbus and Marco Polo must have felt.
Advice about make-up, skin care and above all Estee Lauder people offered free stuff too!!! Hello, samples!
Free Advanced Night cream samples and free foundation samples. All you had to do is visit your nearest Estee Lauder counter.
So this morning after double-checking my August edition of Fairlady for the names of the two products, I faced my fear and set out to Cavendish in Claremont to make my skin glow.
I pointed out exactly what I wanted to the consultant – who turned out to be just the right amount of friendly.
She offered me a sample of another day cream and then I asked for the sample of foundation they mentioned on their Facebook wall.
She made me sit on a high chair and held a chart against my skin to gauge the correct colour. And then took out a brush and started adding layers of colours on top of the foundation.
Pink eye shadow to my eyes and peach blusher to my cheeks.
I was so shocked by her niceness that I just let her do her thing. Even when a little boy came and watched proceedings.
From some unknown place in my core being, I found my voice and asked for the Advanced Night Cream sample as well.
I left the store with bloodshot eyes, made even worse by the pink eyeshadow.
Went to Clicks to buy some EyeGene to clear my eyes and went merrily on my way home.
Now I await my miracle cure…free gifts or not, I still spent close to R1000 for my efforts.

Oubaas is very happy when Marcelle, his sisters’s daughter comes to visit. She’s played by Oubaas’ real life daughter Zetske van Pletzen. Zinzi walks in on Aggie and Patrick.

The million Rand question today is of course where Julius Malema gets his money from to fund his lavish lifestyle.
Malema tried to get a court interdict to stop City Press from publishing the results of their findings, but lost the battle. He has to pay the court costs.
Another expense to be deducted from the R20 000 – R25 000 a month he earns from the ANC Youth League.
Add that to the rates he must be paying for a R4 million house in Sandown, Gauteng, amenities bills, petrol, food, jewellery, child support, etc. Then what’s left over for renovations at a cost of R16 million?
Shame, poor Julius!
City Press though claims Malema is getting more than just a salary. (Actually anyone with half a brain knows that.) Now though there seems to be proof, in the form of The Ratanang Family Trust of which Julius is the only trustee.
Funny that…
But who is paying money into the trust’s ABSA bank account?
There seems to be truth in the claims of rewards being paid to the trust for assisting business people with getting tenders, but would that add up to R16 million for a house alone?
(BTW, I wonder if Julius also receives those constant e-mails from ABSA asking him to verify his login details.)
My colleague and I have been speculating for a while that Julius Malema is a mere puppet for someone who wants more political power. And the name of a certain rich Minister who wanted to be president after Nelson Mandela, keeps cropping up.
Who knows.
Malema must think Bantu education robbed all of us of the ability to do Maths. Or he is so supremely arrogant that he doesn’t even care what anyone thinks of his obvious display of wealth.
Either way, Julius Malema is once again under media scrutiny. This should be fun!

I called my sister today from work as I sometimes do. We did the usual greetings and then I asked her: “Where are you?” As I sometimes ask.
Her answer…”Mitchell’s Plain.” “Visiting the auntie!”
“You are where???” I almost shouted into the phone. And may I add, I wouldn’t have minded being anywhere other than work today!
“Mitchell’s Plain,” she repeated. Lowering her voice.
“What????!!” “Without me?” I asked, hopefully sounding sorely disappointed. (Hey, I’m not yet above making my little sister – and mother of three of my nieces – feel guilty.)
“I’ve got some skinder for you.” she said.
“But I can’t talk now.”
Damn, she still knows how to get her revenge!
But not long after I received a BBM from her with a rather cryptic message. “You’re going to have a new cousin!”
None of my auntie’s or uncle’s are younger than 60 so pardon my surprise.
Turns out my Mitchell’s Plain auntie’s husband who moved into a shack behind his new, much younger girlfriend’s parents house in Lost City, has now got the girl pregnant.
He is 66 years old and she is barely 25! But. They’re. In. Love.
My Mitchell’s Plain auntie is not a happy camper. And was I ever happy to be at work, not experiencing her wrath!
She apparently thinks he did it so he could get a divorce! But my auntie says he will fry in hell first.
So to appease my auntie’s children, my mother decided to go to Mitchell’s Plain to calm the waters by using the counselling skills they learnt at church. Not very successfully, by all accounts.
But even husband trouble was not enough to stop my auntie from being a good hostess. She baked bread for lunch and served it with a choice of jams, cheese and who knows what else, according to my sister.
Although this time she didn’t bother with the good crockery.
Now that is worrying!
