Pick n Pay’s Smart Shopper Card
Pick n Pay’s latest marketing tool isn’t new at all. Many other retailers have loyalty programs, including Clicks.
But somehow this new smart shopper card Pick n Pay is marketing on tv and Facebook – with smart shopper app and all – is making me take note. Clever marketing by the way.
Calling the card a smart shopper card is…smart too.
We like our retailers and everyone else for that matter to think of us as smart people
Even when they’re taking our hard earned money on a regular basis.
And we all need to grocery shop, like it or not. Being offered rewards for a horrible (for me) chore can only be good.
Currently I shop at Checkers because I dislike the layout of the Pick n Pay store in my local mall. So we’ll see whether convenience and comfort wins over offers of rewards.
Anyway, the Pick n Pay smart shopper card will reward customers with 1 point for each R1 spent and also double, triple and bonus points on special offers.
At the end of each quarter shoppers will be able to spend their earned points at Pick n Pay.
Apparently all you have to do is apply in-store with your ID number and start shopping.
I might go check it out on Monday since I have to go shopping anyway.
Because whether I use the smart shopper card or not, I like the whole campaign and the way it’s been rolled out on tv and on social media at the same time.
I think they’ve just outsmarted other retailers.

Their marketing campaign must be brilliant…I haven’t seen it at all!
I dislike my local PnP too. The nearest store is just not nice, they never stock up on basics, there’s always a shortage of one or other item that can be found in abundance elsewhere.
And what on earth do they need your ID number for?

On the 14 march i bought Pnp 100% juice 6 in a pack from mmabatho,it was priced 17,99 but i ended up paying 21,99. You should get your prices right.

Dear Claudine.
Thank you for your feedback about your local Pick n Pay store. I would really like to know which store you shop at as I would like to address the out of stock problem. I would appreciate it if you could call me on 011 856 7871 or on 0798942434.
Your ID number is a safe guard or security on your Smart Shopper card so that if it is lost or stolen no one can switch your points and use them.
I look forward to hearing from you. Each day we strive to improve on our service offerings and I would appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns.

Dear Glass Pearl,
I too am enticed by the Pick ‘n Pay’s loyalty program. I currently enjoy the rewards of similar programs at other shopping chains.
Finally P’nP have introduced a discount/reward that applies across the board to all P’nP stores. I previous wondered why P’nP Hyper shoppers get to benefit from pamphlet advertised discounts on items that are also stocked by the smaller P’nP branches, while a customer of these smaller branches does not benefit.
This new loyalty program may have made a regular P’nP shopper out of me. However I loathe shopping at my local P’nP. Each time I visit my local P’nP I return home extremely frustrated; due to the fact that many of their products do not have prices on the shelves and because the barcode scanner to check those items seldom works. Furthermore, I have on a number of occasions found that the price at the till did not correspond to that displayed at the shelves. My P’nP also takes forever to acquire new stock of items when they run out.
I prefer to shop at the other chain stores and will continue to do so despite P’nP’s poor attempt to reward customers. I would prefer that P’nP make my shopping experience more enjoyable and less taxing, and a measly 1% return on purchases is not going to win my favour.
Sadly, I believe that there is little that P’nP can do to win customers due to their shocking and shoddy public relations. The whole chain desperately requires a public relations overhaul.

The flier shows a conversion ratio of R1 = 1 point, which is very misleading when the actual conversion ratio is 100 points = R1.
1% cashback is negligible and in no way “comparable to other loyalty programmes” as they claim. I already earn 10% cashback through Vitality and a further 25% cashback on HealthyFood.
I don’t see why P’nP didn’t just save themselves the cost of producing and marketing these cards and just reduce their prices by 1% instead. It works out exactly the same to the consumer and would be a much better incentive.
It is not even worth your time swiping the card at every purchase. Who needs yet another loyalty card to carry around?

Hi Mary,
At my local PnP in Panorama, Cape Town, they keep telling me that I will be notified when I reach a 1000 points, because then I can get a voucher, I’m just curious as to what the value of the voucher would be.
Also, I’ve got a major problem at our PnP when it comes to parking, as they share the “complex” with other businesses, like a pharmacy, hairdresser, etc. Sometimes we have to circle the area waiting for someone to leave, it is EXTREMELY annoying, because I think the staff take up most of the parking lot, which leaves the PnP customers with very little parking bays. The managers are also very laxy daisy, they are always hanging out with the staff, chatting and joking around. I don’t think the staff see them as a threat, and I don’t think they are very professional. You can spot a mile away when the owner is there for the day, because then the staff are on their posts and they are filling up the shelves, because the shelves are very empty otherwise. It is really a treat to watch the staff & managers scram when the owner is there the day. And you can see he doesn’t take nonsense. Just a few pointers, use it, don’t use it….
Have a good day!

Hi L,
I TOTALLY agree, it is really not worth swiping the card, to get a measly R10 back for every R1000 you spend, how can they even call that a loyalty “reward”. I give the parking guard at least R5 each time I go shop there, so it doesn’t even cover that.
Clearly they didn’t think this one through

This smart shopper reward program is a joke. Pick n Pay steals more than 1% from me when I do purchases. As I frequently get overcharged for items. Just recently I paid R20 more for a product that was marked as R29.99 on the shelf. And complaining makes no difference as they never rectify the system so that the shelf price and the till price match.
I did get the R20 back, but did not get the product free as their policy promises. But I had to wait over half an hour to get the refund. Time is money. And I have never to waste on Pick n Pay.

I’m just glad that PnP has stopped advertising the lie they will open every till in a store to ease the congestion at the queues.
Now that was a lie that could be recorded in Guiness World Records. Many of the PnP stores that I shop at have looong slooow queues and have less than half the tills open.
Well at least now I’ll be getting a little bit more out of PnP for the shear irritation of shopping there. But R1 back for R100 spent is very little.

All I can say is that the Pick and Pay Family Store – the Towers in Boksburg is AWESOME – no congestion at the tills, wonderful layout, fresh produce, friendly and helpful staff and the best bread in town! About the smart shopper card – saw they were advertising it in store the other day and I was curious but have not yet had a proper look at it…….the issue of pricing – just make sure they get it right – on the odd occasion there has been a mistake with the pricing the guys at The Towers have been more than willing to correct it – after all the only people who do not make any mistakes are those who do nothing all day.
By Gwendolyne on Mar 25, 2011 | Reply
I also find it a shock how slow the lines instore are.. My local pick and pay have so many tills closed at times and that puts me in alot of discomfart due to being disabled and being in cronic pain having to stand and wait. And i have applyed for work there often but to no luck the staff is friendly towards me but the manager dislike me becouse im a client that knows the client comes first! A smile would help every now and again. And the smart shopper reward is a bad joke in my eyes. And the price tags that differ at the till sometimes i just want to sue but i dont i just remain calm and smile.
By chris on Mar 25, 2011 | Reply
ONE % cash back is no cash back at all, due to the fact that at Beacon Bay PnP, i OFTEN get overcharged (sometimes by R25, or more) for items.
it takes a while to get these “errors” reversed, and i have had to argue with managers in order to get the item at no cost, as advertised.
These are fairly regular occurences, and are quite obviously cleverly calculated and planned, and are based on the fact that most of us simply do not have the time to check each and every single price on our till slips against those advertised/on the shelf.
PnP – YOU ARE NOT ON OUR SIDE, AND ALTHOUGH YOU MANAGE TO FOOL MOST OF THE PEOPLE MOST OF THE TIME, YOU DO NOT GET ALL OF US, ALL OF THE TIME.
So, the R30 i get back on a R 3 000 shop has usually been claimed back again by yourselves, through monotonously regular overcharging.
Not a bad scam all in all, though. I have seen worse.
By Storm Landsman on Mar 25, 2011 | Reply
Have not yet obtain my card, however, after reading about getting R1 for every R1000,00 spent cannot be correct! As I understand this, you get triple points for some items and double for others? Otherwise, what THE FRIKKADEL are we all wasting our time for?
PnP – Please throw in some other incentive to attract buying in your stores,ie. Monthly draws of money – Lucky card numbers etc. etc.
Thank you – see you soon

Behind every check-out there is a staff notice which read something along this line: “Ask every customer if they have a smart shopper card. This will not only be profitable to yourself, but also to this story. This is an order from management”.
This is not a direct quote, but close enough to the real thing. The words ‘profitable’ are clearly printed on this notice. This is behind EVERY checkout (so that only the cashier can see it unless the customer gets a view from behind the till). This is in Pick n Pay Parkade Mall in the Cape Town CBD.
So yes – another scam card made for profit. When they give you the card the ‘marketing’ ladies (if you can call them that as they have NO knowledge of the product except the ‘you get a point per rand’ line) don’t explain that it only starts working above a certain threshold as well as what makes this so ‘profitable’ to all other than the customer.
By Glass Pearl on Mar 31, 2011 | Reply
Que seling, thanks for your response. A real eye opener.
Personally I don’t do loyalty cards as I buy where the items are cheapest and the store is laid out conveniently. Which is Checkers in Kenilworth Centre for me.
However, retailers are in it for profit and rightfully so. We would go hysterical if our retailers were socialised and run by the state.
This is the price we pay for capitalism. And yes, a loyalty card is just another way to increase a retailers profits. And I have no problem with that.
By Ray singh on Apr 1, 2011 | Reply
hi
I am following the loyalty program as well with great interest. I must add that shipping experiences is an individual choice in terms of the experience and value for money. I shop at the Woodmead Pick n Pay and can honestly saythat it is world class and having just been to the UK and frequenting stores like
In terms of pricing , the mere fact that in all you gain in a loyalty program is some reduction in price in the climate we live in should be generously welcomed.
To conclude, let’s support it and think about people that are less fortunate than ourselves that benefit from the program.

One of the packers told me I should bring the item to the till to get the price which I do have time for . While am stil on that , the store is always out of stock. The cashiers must always promote the smart shopper card instead they don’t greet or even ask if you do have a snart shopper card.the customer service is very poor, Please make sure you follw up on my complain because I want to enjoy shopping at pick n pay. By dee on May 1, 2011 | Reply
1 % is negligible when one considers that firstly, other shops may be and often are, cheaper than p&p,also shelf prices OFTEN do not correspond to the price scanned. It’s impossible to keep track of what price you saw on the shelf and what is scanned at the till and when on occasion you do and query it, firstly you wait till someone saunters to the relevant shelf and bring the price tag back, then you wait some more till the supervisor comes to the till to subtract the incorrect price and put in the shelf price and NEVER NEVER NEVER do they give it to you free as they advertise.Take notes if you are really interested, Mary-Anne Hattingh.I doubt anyone cares though…the incorrect shelf pricing has never been sorted out,and by not having a price on the item itself, you know well that most of us will be schlentered at some point…1%,hell!!!!
By Chalene on May 11, 2011 | Reply
Guys and girls why the fuss. There is no harm in getting a card. You will be surprised how much points you build up by using your card at any P&P. It doesn’t cost you a cent to subscribe to the card. My first question when I applied was also “O yeah another card”. I checked in store today and my points were over 13 000. I swipe my cards whenever I buy groceries or just small things. I swipe when I buy alcohol or just the day to day necessities. After the first month and a half I can go and buy for R1 300. Almost my months groceries. Try it because you can use it at any Pick & Pay retailer!

I have made 7 phone calls in total and the problem has still not been sorted out (as simple as it may be). I HAVE GIVEN ALL THE DETAILS TO 7 DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND AM SICK AND TIRED OF REPEATING MYSELF JUST TO BE TOLD THE PROBLEM HAS TO BE ESCALATED!!!
When I log onto my smartshopper card by using my user name and password someone else’s details pop up (ALL their details).
Surely this invasion of someone else’s privacy is not right i.e. I can see their phone numbers, address, names, ID and smartshopper card number.
Every time I phone I have to go through the whole story again and am told this has to be escalated!!!!! I have now had enough – how many people have got access to my personal details?
I can use my Smartshopper card at the machine in the store (that is correct) and I am able to cash in my points etc, but it is just when I log in on-line!!! It was correct to start with so I don’t know when and how this has gone wrong.

A friendly store with a “slapgat” attitude wil close it’s doors . . I Also love my pnp (greenstone hyper ~jhb) where i get treated like any other client with “world class quality) . As you can see . . I don’t hide behind words . . Only a coward would do as you have done !
