You Magazine’s Semenya Photoshoot
You Magazine has a covershoot of Caster Semenya, South Africa’s 800m World Champion all dressed up with make up and a wig.
See www.you.co.za.
Many sportswomen do not look particularly feminine in photoshoots because of their muscular build and Semenya is no different.
Actually, she looks like one of the Williams’ sisters on that You magazine cover.
The magazine though is perpetuating the myth that putting make-up on a woman will make her look feminine. It doesn’t always!
And Caster Semenya looks more feminine in her tracksuit than she does on the cover of You.
Caster Semenya (as far as we the public know) was born female, grew up female, but has shown no signs of traditional femininity.
That should be enough. Not all girls play with dolls and wear frilly dresses and curls in their hair.
Not all women are heterosexual. And not all heterosexual women wear dresses and make-up.
Caster shouldn’t have to prove anything and wearing glamourous outfits and make-up is not providing that proof anyway.
In fact it does the exact opposite.

That’s the thing sthembile…You magazine should not have dressed Caster up into something she’s not. There’s nothing wrong with not wearing make-up and dresses.
