Dont quit your day job just yet – Gareth Cliff

Written on August 22, 2009 – 5:49 pm | by Glass Pearl |

So Mnet have announced a new talk show featuring Gareth Cliff.

It starts on Wednesday 23 September at 8.00pm on the pay station and will include Gareth and a panel of three plus a studio audience.

All good and well…except for the fact that local talk shows have never worked in my recollection.

Just recently we had Kgomotso on SABC 2 cackling like a hyena while trying to get her guests to look more interesting than they were.

Mind you she was by far not the worst. There’s Paul Viv who no one outside his circle of friends knew before he was handed a late night talk show gig on SABC3.

Didnt work!

Sharleen Surtie Richards…should’ve, could’ve but ultimately…no go!

The less said about SABC3′s current Sunday night political satire with Darren something or other, the better.

As for Gareth Cliff…at least he’s still staying with 5fm where he has music and a team of presenters to make him look good on his bad days.

The real reason talk shows didn’t work well is because we don’t have real celebrities, the same politicians parade in front of the media day in and day out and we are far too politically correct to allow ourselves to be labelled to conservative or to radical.

Good luck to Gareth Cliff though. Maybe he’s the one who will break the talk show duck.

I won’t be holding my breath though.
