Mid Year School Holidays on the Cape Flats
This morning on Capetalk 567 a mother on the Cape Flats mentioned that she had no other choice but to leave her children alone at home during school holidays as she had to to work.
Another mother said she couldn’t do anything if her child wanted to roam the streets, because he/she is bored during school holidays and refuses to stay indoors.
With this kind of mentality is it any surprise that children are being abused and even murdered by people in their own communities?
If its not the parents responsibility, who should be taking care of these children?
There seem to be an expectation that schools and teachers should be babysitting, instead of educating.
Do these parents even hear themselves talking?
Of course most parents do need to work. No one’s arguing against that fact.
But they also have a responsibility to see that their children are taken care of. No one forced them to have children they can’t afford.
Letting children run wild in this sick society we live in should not be an option.
Parents should be held responsible for their children if they are left unattended for hours on end and are harmed because of their parents negligence.
It’s a disgrace that the NGO who commented on the story on Capetalk blamed poverty for the disappearance, rape and murder occuring on a fairly regular basis.
Blame bad parenting instead!
Not all poor parents leave their 10 year old daughter or 6 year old son alone during the day.
If you know you can’t provide a safe place for children, then don’t have them at all!
