Oprah: Talking to Children about Sex
On Tuesday’s Oprah show, her guest was the show’s resident sex therapist Dr Berman.
The topic: talking to children about sex.
Oprah warned that the topic would be controversial and would anger some people.
And I guess it would have raised a few eyebrows.
The show had a smart 10 year old girl hearing the sex talk while being filmed.
While I started the sex chat with my 11 year old niece more than a year ago, it wasnt easy.
I asked advice from a colleague, got books out the library, but in the end just swallowed my embarresment and just did it.
Damn, looks like I’ll have to invite the child (with her parents knowledge) for another chat, as we missed out a few things!
As much as I believe that children must be given as much information as possible, that Oprah Doctor went over the top with some of her information.
Like suggesting vibrators for teen girls.
Hell no!
Thats where I draw the line.
The mechanics of sex, yes and the psychology of it, yes.
Contraception, condoms and STI’s, definitely.
I might be more enlightened than my niece’s mother and my own mother, but not that enlightened!
