Wow! I’m in total shock!
Like many tennis fans I took it for granted that Rafael Nadal would at the very least make it to the French Open final and in all likelihood win the tournament as he did four times in the last four years!
As a Roger Federer fan it’s a relief of course. Although we’ll have to see how Federer responds. We won’t be counting chickens yet.
Anyway, Nadal was beaten for the first time at Roland Garos by the Swedish player Robin Soderling in 4 sets, 6-2 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 7-6 (7-2).
Understandably very disappointed, but also not very sportingly, Nadal declared:
“It was more my fault than him playing well. I didn’t play my best tennis and for that reason I lost. It wasn’t my day.”
Imagine one of the Williams sisters saying something like that and not be called all sorts of names.
This was 24 year old Soderberg’s biggest win of his career.
He joked that Bjorn Borg should at least be sending him an sms for halting Nadals waltz to another French Open title. Borg held 4 consecutive French Open titles – the same as Nadal.

And here we thought we have problems in the Western Cape with racial problems…
Serena Williams lost a point in the French Open 3rd round on Saturday and all hell broke lose – on internet message boards!
It started when Serena hit a ball at her opponent, the Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, at the net. Maria put her hand/racquet up to protect herself.
What happened next only Sanchez herself will know.
According to Williams the ball hit her opponents arm which according to tennis rules means Serena should have won the point.
Sanchez says the ball hit her racquet only. The umpire agreed with her.
Although Sanchez subsequently won the set, Williams eventually defeated her in three sets.
Afterwards Serena Williams accused Maria of cheating, saying: “I hit that ball rather hard; she knew that ball hit her.”
Of course since it’s one of the Williams sisters involved, race had to raise it’s ugly head on internet discussion boards after the match with ugly comments directed at both Spaniards and black people.
It is amazing something small like a tennis match in Paris can elicit the same emotions as a general election in far off South Africa.

According to IOL.co.za a wealthy South African businessman offered Thabo Mbeki R1billion to equip the government with hi-tech systems to fight crime.
This man actually wrote a whole book on how to use this money.
Thabo Mbeki apparently rejected this offer.
And rightfully so!
Does this businessman think criminals would actually stop their activities because the police have better equipment?
Hell, they’ll probably steal the equipment and murder a few people in the process.
If he was that interested in solving the crime scourge why not take the money and build houses or better equipped schools and public libraries in townships?
Why not use that money and technology to give children and young adults an option besides resorting to crime?
Get social programmes going to get children off the streets and occupied.
Why not build sports fields and clubhouses and drug rehabilitation centres?
Why not create jobs?
This businessman is full of crap! If he was serious about doing something, he could easily do so – without permission from government.
He is apparently going to make the same offer of a billion rand to the Zuma presidency.
Hopefully they will reject it too.
Crime isn’t just some isolated problem that can only be solved with arresting criminals.
Yes criminals must be arrested, there must be much more visible policing by a motivated police force and there must be better investigations of crime and there must be a better justice system and sentences must be served out in prisons and there must be better means of rehabilitating criminals.
But wouldn’t it be smarter to stop crime before it even starts?
