South Africa’s electoral process is on par with the United States and Japan according to the Democracy Index survey, although our democracy is seen as flawed.
Every citizen above the age of 18 who registered has the right to vote .
Over 23 million South Africans have registered to vote in the 2009 elections.
A Freedom Front supporter challenged the courts allowing South Africans living overseas right to vote – and won.
Overseas South Africans voted on 15 April.
There are 19726 voting stations throughout the country.
Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
In 2004 the ANC won 69.69% of the vote.
Preparations for elections started 18 months ago.
Results are officially released 2 days after the elections to give parties the chance to lodge complaints if needed.
