Disappointing Proteas

Taking absolutely nothing away from their fantastic test series win against the Aussies in Australia, this current tour back home has been nothing short of disappointing.

Everything fell flat right from the start, when the selection panel headed by Mike Proctor, picked the often erratic Neil Mckenzie over the ever dependable Ashwell Prince.

From there on in everything went wrong.

Graeme Smith lost both tosses – luck of the coin even went against the guys.

In defense of Dale Steyn (sort of) a lot was expected of him and maybe the pressure and expectation was too much for him, because he was just not successful at all. The same with Morne Morkel.

The batting – what can I say about the batting that is positive! Apart from one good fighting innings from both AB De Villiers and JP Duminy, nothing much.

In Johannesburg when Graeme Smith all but lost the test for SA by trying to hook a ball, I told my colleague – that’s it. Match over.

The graft and fighting spirit they had a few months ago, was left on the Australian shores.

Now here we are on Day 3 of the 2nd Test at Kingsmead and I can’t even look at the tv.

Graeme Smith is out for the rest of the test match and series with a broken middle finger on his right hand, as opposed to the finger Mitchell Johnson broke on his left hand in Australia.

The Australians are batting as if they are having a lovely Sunday afternoon at their local park and our bowlers are toiling as if they too broke some fingers and need to hospitalised as well.

Looks like I will have to save the money I would have spent on the Newlands test and buy myself some expensive chocolate to drown my cricketing sorrows with.

Although sitting at Newlands, you have to remind yourself there’s play going on in the field as there is always so much fun stuff happening around you.

Usually the worse the cricket situation gets, the more entertaining the crowd becomes.
