New ANC Election Advertisement

Written on February 28, 2009 – 8:23 pm | by Glass Pearl |

At about 8.00pm tonight, I channel hopped to SABC 1 while waiting for a movie to start and lo and behold there was the ANC election advert.

This is the first SA election where political ads are permitted.

I am a bit sceptical about political advertising on tv and for the most part will just change the channel when other parties do their bit of advertising Democratic Alliance, Freedom Front, etc.

So I guess all the parties will be preaching to their own party choirs.

I liked the ANC advert, but then I am an ANC supporter.

It shows on old man in a rural area speaking in Zulu (I think).  The English translation appears on the screen as well.

He talks about being proud to have voted for Nelson Mandela.  He mentions that the ANC built houses, brought electricity and water and built schools in his area.

Near the end he gets up and points a stick at the camera saying: even though lots have been done, lots still need to be done, but he is voting ANC in appreciation for what he has now.

Then the screen changes to Jacob Zuma who asks voters to vote for the ANC.  This part I could have done without. I pretty much tuned out at this point.

Although I feel good about the ANC in general, whenever I’m reminded of that man Zuma, I think of all the things I’m writing on my ballot in lieu of a cross next to his face!

Many ANC supporters who don’t like Zuma just don’t need to be reminded constantly that he will be the presidential candidate.

We support the ANC and NOT any individual!

The ANC’s advertisment simply brings back all of the emotion surrounding the ‘struggle’. Why? Simply, because they have not delivered since being in power, they have a dismal track record to go on and have nothing left but to hark back to the Apartheid – the last time they got anything right.

    Hi Aimee,

I disagree that the ANC have not delivered.

Even though they still have lots of work to do, more people have houses, running water, electricity and other basic amenities than we had prior to 1994. Not even counting dignity!

The ANC are not miracle workers. They can not wish away apartheid and wish that everyone in the country could have jobs set aside for them and prime land given to them like was done in the apartheid years.

Anyway, those who don’t think they are better off than in 1994 are can vote accordingly.
