Cricket: The Aussies are in town

The Australian cricket team landed in Johannesburg this week for their tour of South Africa.

They are rather unsurprisingly confident of victory against the Proteas in the 3 match test series which starts on 26 Februaryat the Bullring in Johannesburg .

After the series defeat theysuffered in both the one dayers and test series over the summer, one would think the Aussies would take a leaf out of the Proteas book and approach the local media with more humility and less baseless bravado.

Graeme Smith and his men will undeniable be favourites.  The team played well as a whole over the last year or so.

It certainly could be stronger, with Ashwell Prince in themiddle order, but for some reason the selectors stuck with the erratic Neil Mckenzie.

Hopefully the groundsmen at the three venues, prepare fair pitches that last well over 5 days.  Doctored pitches almost always backfire on the home team!

Smith is confident that he’ll be fit after his heroic batting in the final test – with a broken finger and damaged elbow.

As for the Australians – they will come back fighting, but they remind me of past South African teams who talked a good game before the matches started.

If all goes according to plan and SA wins at the Wanderers, they will end the cricket year as number 1 in both test series and 1 dayers.
