A Sporting Weekend in Cape Town

Written on February 13, 2009 – 10:28 am | by Glass Pearl |

This Friday the 13th/Valentine’s weekend is a HUGE sporting one in our city, Cape Town.

The games can either make or break this weekend!

First the Cape Cobras take on the Dolphins at the Newlands cricket ground in the Pro 20/20 semi-final.

Graeme Smith will be back to captain the side and JP Duminy will be there as well.  We’ll have to wait and see which Herchelle Gibbs pitches up.  If he’s in the right frame of mind, then the Dolphin’s Sanath Jayasuriya will have some competition.

If not then we have to hope Henry Davids, Smith or Duminy plays well.

The Cobras have been blowing hot and cold this entire summer.  But just like the poem of the little girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead.  When the Cobras are good, they are very, very good. (207 anyone?)  And when they are bad they are horrid!  Absolutely HORRID!  Bowled out for 88!  Sort of like England bad.

Cobras have: Graeme Smith (capt), Herschelle Gibbs, JP Duminy, Henry Davids, Justin Ontong, Richard Levi, Andrew Puttick (wicketk), Roger Telemachus, Rory Kleinveldt, Claude Henderson, Charl Langeveldt.

Saturday afternoon brings the start of the Stormers Super 14 campaign.

(I’m the kind of girl who would much rather spend Valentine’s Day at the rugby or cricket…but that’s just me.)

Funny enough another Durban side will be our opponents – the Sharks are in town.

The Stormers LOVE playing with our emotions.  They play the best rugby on the planet, only to fall one or two points short of the semi-finals at the end of the season.

Every season our front row is written off – and so it is again.  As with Herchelle Gibbs at the cricket, we will just have to wait and see what Stormers team will pitch up.

Stormers squad: Conrad Jantjes/Percy Montgomery, Tonderai Chavhanga, Gcobani Bobo, Jean De Villiers (capt), Nick Koster, Pe ter Grant, Ricky Januarie, Duane Ver meulen, Francois Louw, Schalk Burger, Andries Bekker, Adriaan Fondse, Brian Mujati, Schalk Brits, JD Moller. Reserves: Deon Fourie, Wicus Blaauw, AJ Venter, Luke Watson, Bolla Con radie, Joe Pietersen and Percy Mont gomery/Sireli Naqelevuki.

And so an exciting sporting weekend awaits us sports fans.
